Where'd You Go, Bernadette

I recently read this interesting novel called Where'd you go Bernadette by Maria Semple. I just couldn't stop reading it. I continuously read it even while having my breakfast and lunch and in the park where I take my evening stroll and finally completed reading the book before I went to bed.The story is jaunty and attractive.

The book just gives you so much of information. It goes on and on, adding to lots of information is the eccentric character of Bernadette Fox. Bernadette who is an intelligent architect from LA who settles down in Seattle, yet her experiences in life let her grow blackberries in the basement of her home! Constantly concentrating on her 15 year old daughter Bee she just does everything she could do for her house and her daily life. She is very honest and loyal. Her loneliness perhaps made her disclose her personal life to Manjula Kapoor via e-mails. It'll be interesting to know who Manjula Kapoor is by reading this book!

It all starts with Balakrishna aka Bee, Bernadette's daughter. She is a straight A or rather straight S student, a sweet girl who loves her mom. After scoring straight S's she wants her parents to take her on a trip to Antartica! Bernadette who is going through a lot of crisis with the other moms in the neighborhood of Seattle(It's nice when she calls the other disturbing moms of her neighborhood as Gnats :)) is confused, frustrated, self loathing persona while the Antartica trip is getting closer.

Maria Semple tests your wit by creating curiosity on where'd bernadette go, what will happen when she is found, what will happen to Bee, what's wrong with Elgie (Bernadette's husband)?
I loved reading this novel. This book doesn't have a single narrator in the first chapter. The dossier of all the e-mails and phone conversations is more thought provoking. A must read this November.

Vintage letters

Vintage letters are treasures for me. The art of writing letters was in practise since 300 A.D. After 16th century writing letters became an art. Letters were not just used for communication but it became an art also. The design of the letter took a uniform design when the British came to India and started ruling over. Even to this day in some villages of India, the post man or the teachers of the school should open the letter and read it. Today, some vintage letters are preserved in the families, in the Government offices, Parliaments and the collectors who fancy collecting vintage letters. I have preserved letters from Great grandfather and my GrandFather.  I feel that these vintage letters are some sort of treasure that I have. Funniest part is, it takes a long time to come to the matter itself because the starting two- three sentences is to be polite enquiries and whereabouts of each other and ending the letter used to be with elegant words. I will post some pictures of the ...
